Hiking on a warm summer afternoon in the Austrian Alps near St Johann, we spotted a commotion in a pen of cattle. Two or three milk cows seemed to be herding one of their fellow ladies while another of the ladies jumped up for a ride. Was this an exercise in establishing social ranking, an attempt to ease aching udders, a commentary on bovine sexuality, or just plain boredom?
