Reader Andrew Hayes tries to explain his fascination for fresh household linens.

Normally, when one hears the word 'obsession', adjectives like unhealthy or dirty come to mind. Sometimes, though, obsession can be as fresh as the dew on a spring flower -- or whatever clever tagline is on your particular brand of fabric softener. Yes, that's right, my name is Andrew and I am a clothesline-aholic. I cannot help but sneak a peak at what is out to dry for posterity's sake. You could argue that by putting your clean clothes out in the public eye gives me the right to snoop. However, once you talk about putting those into a magazine like Everywhere, it might be a different story. All I have to say is this: at least they are clean!

I had to smile when I saw this article and your photos because it's one of the things I'm fascinated about. In many old and historic buildings in my country, people have no option but to hang their clothes from balconies and windows as has been done for centuries. Not everyone has the luxury of a tumble dryer. Although it's frowned upon by the authorities and probably not legal in many places, I find it gives a certain character to certain areas. Some narrow streets in Valletta are just not the same without a load of colourful laundry hanging from a tradition wooden balcony.
