Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon

Sandstone walls in upper Antelope slot Canyon. Northern Arizona.

Antelope Slot Canyon is a natural wonder located in Page, AZ on Navajo land. Sandstone walls carved out by flash floods as high as 90 feet, have created a place that is almost surreal, but naturally stunning. Sunlight filters through the sandstone "ceiling" creating powerful sunbeams that reach the sandy floor. The walls consist of rich hues, detailed patterns, and interesting curves and lines.

When approaching Antelope Canyon, there is no obvious clue as to where it is located. Three miles into a dry wash, you come up on towering walls, and can drive no further. A short walk into an opening and you are in a whole new world.

The best time to visit is May through September, mid-morning to mid-afternoon. These times are ideal for the light beams that filter in through the ceiling. Outside the canyon, the temperature can easily reach 100 degrees, but once inside, the temperature drops as much as 20 degrees.

Lighting in the canyon poses a photographic challenge. As time passes, the color and sunbeams change. A tripod is necessary. Experiment with the settings on your camera! Different time exposures and ISO can create totally different photographs.

I'm sad I lived in Phoenix for over 10 years and never knew about this place or got to make a trip to it! I look forward to going sometime in the near future. Great pictures!
