The main thing I want from my hotel room when I travel is to get a good night's sleep. I also look for tools and features that save me time, so I have more time available to enjoy the place I'm visiting. Here are the ten things I look for:

Fitted sheets

Fitted sheets

This is the number one thing I love to find in a hotel room!

1) Fitted sheets! (these are a rare and precious find)

2) A window that opens

3) Easy-to-understand heating and air-conditioning systems

4) unused power plugs (or better still, a power strip for all my gadgets)

5) a variety of pillow sizes

6) A free bottle of bottled water

7) A bottle opener (seriously, couldn't it just be attached to a wall like in my kitchen at home?)

8) room in the mini-fridge for stashing my own items

9) drinking glasses large enough to hold a grown-up size glass of water

10) an extra blanket (who really wants to sleep under a bedspread that feels like it's made of cardboard and weighs eighty pounds? Sure it looks great in the room but it's not functional).

Absolutely! I usually travel with my own alarm clock because I find the red glowing digital numbers on most hotel alarm clocks distracting when I'm trying to sleep. Plus, I'm never certain if I've actually set it properly. The worst is when the alarm is set before you've even arrived in the room and goes off at 5 a.m.! I guess I'll add that to my forthcoming "ten things I do not love to find in a hotel room" list.

Ditto on the coffeemaker -- such a small thing but such a big difference in terms of getting your day going and getting out the door. I also like having them in my room because I like to travel with a variety of medicinal teas to help with whatever might ail me on the road, or to fix myself some chamomile if I think I might have trouble sleeping.

I may have to modify my list to make room for a few other essentials...in addition to the coffee maker, I also love to find dimmer switches in hotels so I can control the light brightness in my room. And, although it is not technically in my hotel room, a coin-operated laundry facility at a hotel is the ultimate convenience when you have a long stay!
