A Photographic Study of a New Jersey Resort Town in the Off-Season.
My favorite of all the old signs and arcades on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach. Franks Fun Center, with its "old time" choo choo train.
Walking on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, one finds himself strolling between two eras. The summer rentals line the beachfront, the arcades stand ready with their videos games and Skee-ball. The walls of the candy shop are lined with vintage photos of bathing beauties from days gone by. In the off-season, the Atlantic winds can chill you to the bone, but the intrepid seagulls hover in the salty sky while the bundled joggers run up and down the boardwalk.
The signs adorning the shops are small, subtle, and subdued. The old fonts, which appear to be something from the 1930's, evoke a carefree bygone age. One might expect to see flashy and very loud signs, like those found in other beach resort towns, but here, these are very much appreciated for their simple stature.
These photos capture all of the beauty and nostalgia of this lovely seaside retreat. In many ways, a place like Point Pleasant is best appreciated in the off-season.
