Riddim, rum and mud - Carnival in Trinidad
woman covered in mud and paint on J'Ouvert in Trinidad at Carnival time
Our night of mud begins at 2:00 am, as we walk down the middle of the street to find our J’Ouvert Band. Everywhere we look, we see and hear people getting ready for what feels like a war.
Even when the music starts everyone seems to march, or as they call it down here, chip down de road. My band is a riddim section band, rightly called the Mud Wall. We’re the first band to start down the road. Our band truck has only percussion instruments, a drum that keeps the driving beat, a steel pan, a conga drum, an assortment of metal things that people bang on and buckets and buckets of MUD.
De party just start, let wey go!
