Haleakala National Park has two entrances. The more secluded entrance is found on Route 31 (the Kipahulu Road) that you will have to take from Hana-Route 31 through Kaupo has been washed out and is under repair. Those who are willing to make the drive will be treated to views of the Pools of 'Ohe'o, and should you decide to walk the Pipiwai Trail, Infinity Pool, Makahiku Falls, and farther up, 400 foot Waimoku Falls. This part of Haleakala National Park is located in tropical rainforest so come prepared.
The summit of Haleakala National Park is accessed by driving up Route 378 on the other side of Haleakala's 10,023 foot summit. Sunrises viewed from Haleakala's summit have become legendary so if you're the kind of person who doesn't mind...well you get the idea. If you're a nature lover you'll find the nene geese to be accomplished beggars and the Haleakala Silversword to be a fascinating plant species.
The Pony Express Tour horseback ride down Sliding Sands trail comes highly recommended, but you can also take a bike ride back down Route 378 should that thought strike your fancy.
Haleakala used to be 3,000 feet higher, but erosion has taken its toll on this volcano since the last eruption in 1790. Be sure to bring a camera as the views are astounding.
