The Road Out

The Road Out

This is Heckman Pass on Highway 20 (yes, highway) leaving Bella Coola, British Columbia. This guardrail-free, one-lane dirt road, affectionately known as "The Hill" is the only land route out of town. Occaisionally you're faced with an 18-wheeler heading towards you.

BC Ferry at Port Hardy

BC Ferry at Port Hardy

Here the BC Ferry is leaving Port Hardy, on the northern-most tip of Vancouver Island. It takes 12 hours to get to Bella Coola and 24 to Prince Rupert (almost to the tip of Alaska). Save for one or two little towns, the landscape is entirely wilderness.

The cove from which the ferry leaves is the site of the first human habitation of Vancouver Island, aprox. 8000 years ago.
