Tripoli Castle entrance, Lebanon

Tripoli Castle entrance, Lebanon

Entrance to Tripoli Castle, with the Curator briefly seen; the door was hand-made by the Turks he told me.

Tripoli Castle also known as The Fortress of St. Gilles, is believed to have been built in the 12th century BC by the Phoenicians. The castle offers an exceptionable view of the ancient city of Tripoli, and is an important symbol of the Phoenician history of Lebanon.

Today the site is well preserved, popular amongst the tourists who visit Tripoli.

Finding Lebanon.

Story written 2 December 2007

Plagued by decades of war, the tiny Mediterranean country of Lebanon continues to surprise and survive, finding its own way in the turbulent Middle-Eastern region and 21st-century.

In only nine minutes, the Téléphérique transports passengers from the Mediterranean bay of Jounieh to an altitude of 650 meters at the Our Lady of Lebanon shrine in Harissa. Currently, the ride from Jounieh to Harissa on the Téléférique costs 7,500 L.L or US $5.00.

Souk Vendor, Tripoli, Lebanon

Souk Vendor, Tripoli, Lebanon

Produce vendor in the Old Tripoli (Ṭrāblos, in Arabic) souk, Lebanon.

The Souk is long and dark and seems to continue forever. I will always remember the smell...a pungent mixture of sewage (being below street-level), animals, raw meat (from the open-air butchers), produce, baked sweets, animals, stagnant water & mud (from the rain while I was there) and body odor. Congested with people, this tiny alleyway souk is the hub of daily life. A wonderful memory. :)

Arghileh (aka Narghileh or Hookah) water jars with Beirut's Autostrade (seaside freeway) in the background); Arghileh are water pipes for smoking that operate by water-filtration and indirect heat. They can be used for smoking many substances, such as herbal fruits and tobacco.

The Hookahs pictured here were marked 30,000 LL (Lebanese Lira). Currently, 1,000 LL = approx. $0.75 USD, which makes the cost of one of these hookahs approx. $22.50 USD.
