Hassan Tower is the minaret of an incomplete mosque in dating back to the 12th century. Begun in 1195, the tower was intended to be the largest minaret and mosque in the world. In 1199, construction ceased due to the death of sultan Yacoub al-Mansour.
Oia is a beautiful little village made all the more enjoyable by the absence of cars and scooters. If you want to carry people or goods, you do it the old fashioned way.

The oldest leather tannery in the world should not be missed. When approaching the tannery the smell is unmistakable. The balcony overlooks dozens of stone vessels filled with natural dyes. The hides of sheep and goats are first soaked in diluted acidic pigeon excrement and then transferred to other vessels containing vegetable dyes such as henna, saffron and mint. When the dying process has been completed the hides are dried on the roofs of the Medina.
