Pitillal, an oft overlooked municipality of Puerto Vallarta, is one of our favorite places off the beaten tourist path. It is home to the Mexicans who work in the hotels and in the rapidly growing tourist industry yet cannot afford to live in Vallarta. Barbara, an entrepreneur relocating from Kansas City to Santa Fe, New Mexico, conducts much of her business and telecommunications from coach.
The observation car has picture windows and scenery that zips by at 60 miles an hour. The big challenge for landscape photography is shooting through murky tinted windows and avoiding reflections of the landscape zipping past on the other siade of the car.
The days of smoke-filled passenger cars are long gone. Most stops along the Southwest Chief route are too brief for smokers to step off for even a puff, so when a stop of ten minutes or more is announced, it's light-up time.
A leisurely-sipped cup of coffee after a hot breakfast in the dining car is an experience that will never be experienced on an airplane.
