The guidebooks will tell you that, according to Aldus Huxley, Lake Atitlán in Guatemala is “the most beautiful lake in the world.” After a traffic-entangled drive from Antigua, the delightful Hotel Atitlán provided comfortable rooms, tasty food, and gardens beyond lovely. But the most beautiful lake in the world? Overcast skies guide one’s focus to details: flowering shrubs, the "Hola"-cawing parrot, a bubbling Jacuzzi. But eventually a dramatic sunset directs our line of vision up and out. A last look in the morning sunshine. The most beautiful lake in the world? Just maybe it is.
