HiDive on the Waterfront

HiDive on the Waterfront

The HiDive bar on the San Francisco waterfront, just south of the Bay Bridge. Kind of divey on the outside; kind of schwank on the inside.

That's Oakland off in the distance, visible to the east across the San Francisco Bay.

The Best Sandwich in the Entire World!

The Best Sandwich in the Entire World!

This is a xiu mai (Vietnamese meatball pork) sandwich from the Saigon Sandwich shop in San Francisco. I think it's the best sandwich in the world, if not the entire universe.

I do not say this lightly or without full consideration. But I can say it unambiguously: This is not only the best bahn mi Vietnamese sandwich I've ever had; it's the best sandwich I've ever had, at any price, anywhere, ever. And I've had a lot of sandwiches.

Some might argue. Some might quibble or disagree. Fie on them. I'll say it yet again: Best. Sandwich. EVAR.

And that's before we even begin talking about the price. In this case, sublime perfection will set you back just $2.75 per.

The Little Giant

The Little Giant

This is the fire hydrant at the southwest corner of Dolores Park, at 20th and Church Streets, that saved the Mission District during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Now dubbed the "Little Giant" it's painted gold to commemorate the role it played in saving this part of the city.

The sidewalk plaque visible at the lower right reads as follows:

"Though the water mains were broken and dry on April 18, 1906, yet from this Greenberg hydrant on the following night there came a stream of water allowing the firemen to save the Mission District."
