Brothers, Bhutan

Brothers, Bhutan

Two brothers look at me from the doorway. I am inside their home, invited in by mom and dad and they must have wondered who I was and what I was doing there. They were stand offish and unsure of me as visitor. I suspect they were relieved when I left, but not before taking their picture.

Tired monk.

Tired monk.

I watched this little monk working all morning long and when leaving the monastery a few hours later passed him again. This time though he was napping, tired out, like every other kid his age and had put his head down.

Prayer Flags

Prayer Flags

Blue sky and wispy clouds define the sky of Bhutan, punctuated by prayer flags. In Bhutan the prayer flags are typically vertical and attached to poles, as seen here.

Prayer Wheel, Monk, Bhutan

Prayer Wheel, Monk, Bhutan

Upon entering the monastery I passed this monk turning the prayer wheel and chanting, om manni padi hum. Unlike Tibet where most of the Buddhist iconography was destroyed after the invasion in 1959, Bhutan monasteries explode in color and imagery.

Crossing the bridge in Bhutan.

A woman walks across a bridge in Bhutan. The bridge is washed away every season and rebuilt.

Girl, Bhutan

Girl, Bhutan

Out in the country and visiting a village, walking around and meeting people, this little girl just kept watching me. I visited with her parents and walked onto their porch and she let me take her picture. She did not flinch, did not smile, expressed no sense of excitement or modesty, just stared at me. I took numerous shots and in each she is giving me the steely glare you see here.

Baby, Thimpu butcher shop

Baby, Thimpu butcher shop

A baby looks at me over a shoulder. The meat was being carried in from the street on the backs of shop workers. They were covered with blood and strained under the weight, some of the slabs looking twice the size of the workers. I followed them into the shop and spotted this family doing its shopping.

Main Street, Thimpu, Bhutan

Main Street, Thimpu, Bhutan

The intersection of main street in the capital of Bhutan, Thimpu. It is the only national capital without street lights. Traffic seems to pay no attention what-so-ever to the man in the kiosk.

I am (in search of a noun): I am a business owner. I am a photographer. I am a gallery director. I am a traveler. I am a writer. I am that I am--is that out of line, albeit a great line? I live on the Right Coast, need more pages in my passport, developed wanderlust as a young lad, it alighting on me out of no-freak'n-where, and I have enjoyed (and suffered) the consequences ever since.
