Every September, some of the most powerful civil airplanes in the world come together in one place to compete in what is billed as "the world's fastest motorsport". It's a combination of sights and sounds that's difficult to beat.
Whidbey Island sits in Puget Sound about 30 miles northeast of Seattle. It is home to about 60,000 people.
Close to downtown Seattle, Lake Union is a glacial lake that is a popular spot for pleasure boaters and is also home to scores of Seattle residents who occupy houseboats there. Its northern portion also connects the larger Lake Washington with a system of locks that lead to the salt waters of Puget Sound.
The largest city in the Pacific Northwest and a cultural center for the region, Seattle sits between Lake Washington to the east and the Puget Sound to the west.
These locks provide passage for boats transiting between Puget Sound and the fresh water estuary of Seattle's Lake Washington. In the autumn the lock's adjacent ladders fill with migrating salmon that are swimming in from the ocean to their headwaters to spawn.
