A Climb Above The Clouds

A Climb Above The Clouds

A 250-step stairs to the crater of active volcano Gunung Bromo in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park.

Underground Mosque

Underground Mosque

We were wandering around the streets of Yogyakarta in search of the Taman Sari (Water Castle) on foot because we didn't want to pay for a becak. We asked for directions from locals, and instead of finding Taman Sari, we ended up in the Underground Mosque instead. We were happily lost.

Java Art

Java Art

Take a break from Wayang Puppetry or Batik Painting, and stroll along the streets surrounding the Kraton In Yogyakarta. Graffiti, artwork by Yogyakarta's university students are seen painted on traditional Javanese houses.

At The Base Of A Bako Cliff

At The Base Of A Bako Cliff

Bako National Park is the oldest national park in Sarawak. It can only be reached by boat from Kampung Bako. The ride will take you to the beach just right across the park's headquarters. At the end of that beach, is a coastline of cliffs. Here I am seen standing at the base of one of them.

Man Of The Hour

Man Of The Hour

I pass by the Clock Tower Roundabout in Al Ain everyday on my way to work. Whenever I am on mid-shift, just before eleven in the morning, I always see this Pakistani sitting on the same spot beside the clock. I am quite sure he sits there not for prayer, but just to watch time pass by (figuratively and literally).

Chicken, Noodles, and Anti-Mosquito Lotion

Chicken, Noodles, and Anti-Mosquito Lotion

After a trip around the Water Village in Brunei, our water taxi dropped us off far from where he picked us up. "No can, low tide" he said. We were happy though that he docked near a place where food stalls are lined up. Just in time for dinner.

We ordered fried chicken and fried noodles, which came with a delicious broth that has unknown herbs swimming on top. Since we were dining alfresco beside a river, the B$2 meal would not have been enjoyable without anti-mosquito lotion slapped on our skin.

Cheap Motel, Cheap Thrill

Cheap Motel, Cheap Thrill

We arrived late evening in Legazpi, Albay and were too tired to scout around for decent, cheap accommodation. A local friend recommended Great Pacific Tourist Inn, and indeed their rate fit our budget.

After a twelve-hour non-aircon bus ride, we slept straight away after checking in. I awoke early the next day because I needed to go to the toilet. As I was about to step in the bathroom, I gasped when I saw Mt. Mayon out our window. Known as the "Perfect Cone", this is the most active volcano in the Philippines.

Stuck In The Desert

Stuck In The Desert

Desert 4x4 driving is a weekend activity in Al Ain, U.A.E. by Emiratis. Women aren't invited, and my Persian friend tagged me along unaware of it. Fortunately, they let me join the trip though they barely talked to me even when I initiated a conversation in Arabic.

Kandoura-clad locals braving the sand dunes in their posh 4x4s was certainly a sight. I find it hard to imagine them crossing the same harsh desert on camels not too long ago.

Around Yogyakarta

Around Yogyakarta

We were walking to Taman Sari (Water Castle) when we saw this graffiti along the road. Yogyakarta is known for its good universities that are teeming with artsy students who have turned street walls into canvasses.

I was a bit annoyed with all the cars passing by because I couldn't snap a photo of the whole wall by itself. I told myself to be patient and do one last attempt. When I did, a 'becak' passed by and it was caught by my camera. I was so disappointed, but when I saw the photo, I actually liked it!
