Art by Cindy Royal

Art by Cindy Royal

I recently visited the Soulard Art Market in historical Soulard, minutes from downtown St. Louis and discovered the whacky, "outsider" art of Cindy Royal. Her one-of-a-kind creations are a marvel, especially if you like the color purple.

Soulard Art Market

Soulard Art Market

Located in the heart of historical Soulard, this fine art gallery features art by 12 local St. Louis artists. Glass, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and paintings. You can find it all at the SAM gallery.

St. Louis Dog Parade

St. Louis Dog Parade

Jet off to St. Louis? Huh? Why? St. Louis lost out to Detroit in 2007 as the most dangerous city in America, but judging from the amount of tourist that swarm the city during Mardi Gras you would think it was New Orleans. The week before Mardis Gras, St. Louis hosts a pet parade where thousands of dogs and their owners dress up and parade before throngs of revelers. Set in the heart of historic Soulard district, this quirky parade attracts dog lovers from all over the country. Cats are welcome too.

altered bike

Bikes are huge at Burningman. Most people bring their own and modify them. In 2007 over 2,000 community bike were painted green and donated to the event.

Homo Ouroboros

Homo Ouroboros

Burningman has been describes as "Disneyland Turned Upside Down". The emphasis is on community, artwork and self expression. This is my favorite art installation at Burningman titled, Homo Ouroboros. Participants pedaled bikes to make the monkey merrigoround turn. During the night a strobe light gave a stereostobic effect as the monkeys grabbed for each other as a snake delivered the forbidden apple.
