Drifting at the Bring Your Own Big Wheel races

Drifting at the Bring Your Own Big Wheel races

A racer holds on as his... er, vehicle drifts across one of the curves of the race.

For the last six or seven years, the Bring Your Own Big Wheel races (warning: embedded music) have been a San Francisco Easter tradition, started by local Jon Brumit. In 2007, when this picture was taken, a medium-sized event tolerated by the locals grew roughly tenfold, flooding the famous street with between 200 and 300 participants, and many, many more spectators. Complaints about the noise and about $250 of damage caused to the street's hedges has caused the city to clamp down on the race being held on Lombard in the future, so alternate locations are being looked into.

I'm not sure of how to travel; when I go somewhere new, I usually do a bit of aimless wandering to figure out what it's like to be a local, hang out in the neighborhood where I'm staying, maybe visit a couple of interesting locales I read about or had recommended. Once I'm comfortable there, then I can play tourist.

I'm also this site's resident web developer, hey there!
