Shadow Play

Shadow Play

The view from my hospital room window. A line from a journal entry written during my hospital stay reads "boredom follows me around in circles". It's ironic to think that my travel journal could possibly contain such a banal statement, penned while vacationing in countries with such exuberant cultures. Being an avid photographer, my roll of film from these 2 weeks is filled with boring shots of my hospital room and views from my hospital window in an effort to capture something of interest. Definitely not your typical tourist photos.

Hospital Blues

This hospital bed became my home for 10 days when I became hospitalized while backpacking through Europe with my sister.

Angel of the North

Angel of the North

The giant "Angel of the North" sculpture stands on a hill overlooking 2 intersecting freeways in Gateshead England, just outside of Newcastle. It is constructed out of steel and was designed by Antony Gormley. It stands 66 feet tall with an incredible 178 foot wingspan! It is tough to convey its magnitude in a photograph and is definitely a sight to be seen. The onlookers below help give it a sense of scale and that tiny dot on its head is actually a bird!

Traditional Zanzibar Meal

Traditional Zanzibar Meal

While travelling with an adventure tour in Africa, I spent a few days on the "spice islands" of Zanzibar. After visiting the Kidichi Spice Farm, we were treated to a hearty lunch which was flavoured with many of the spices harvested on the farm. We entered a shelter and had to remove our shoes and sit on straw mats. The meal consisted of boiled spinach, fried sardine fish and spiced rice pilau with cassava.

Louvre Geometry

Louvre Geometry

"La Musee du Louvre" in Paris is the world's most famous and most visited art gallery. The modern glass pyramid structure that houses the main entrance to the museum was designed by the renowned architect I.M. Pei. When the pyramid was first erected, some controversy arose because the public felt that its futuristic style contrasted with the classical architecture of the rest of the museum. It eventually became accepted as a statement of merging the old with the new.

I seem to find my greatest inspiration for photography while travelling. Sunlight seems to fall to earth in a different manner in other countries - sometimes warmer, sometimes quieter, sometimes with a vengeance, but always with a fresh perspective.
