This academic and library building at the University of Chicago was designed to blend in with the Oxford-stolen gothic buildings it shares a quadrangle with.

Portal, NM

Portal, NM

The town of Portal is barely more than the shack visible in the background, but the Chiricahuas and otherworldly Chihuahuan scrub that it provide access to are stunning when the weather is tolerable.

Ocean Beath

Ocean Beath

Ocean Beath, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is beautiful, but only if you don't come imagining a classic Southern California beach. The water is never warm or calm enough to be appealing for swimming, and it is rarely a good place to sunbathe. The road fronting the beach is sometimes closed because of water, sand or both. The violent ocean and windswept dunes full of shells can be a good place for a walk, though. Dress warmly.
