June Calm

June Calm

Late morning in early June at the Relais du Lyon D'Or in Angles-sur-L'Anglin is quiet - a great time for sleeping in and quiet walks in this, one of the loveliest villages on France.

The Morning After

The Morning After

Still purring from a fine, multi-course, multi-wine evening in this 14th century former post house, the Relais du Lyon d'Or, we peek through the heavy curtains to find the sun is well on its way into the courtyard. Sad that we will have missed breafast, we ease our way into the day, and find - much to our surprise - breakfast waiting for us in the heavy wood-beamed dining room below.

A June Morning

A June Morning

No other guests share our view from the Chateau de Malaisy in early June - just a few weeks before the French begin their mass summer exodus into the countryside. We awake to song birds and a light, warm breeze rustling through early summer leaves ... and a rich breakfast served for us alone.

Here's to Luck!

Kitchen witches are big in the south of Germany. They all sport wild hair, broomsticks, hooked noses with a bean-sized mole at the tip, and a friendly grimace. This one adds a bit of personality ... and attitude.

From Timbuktou?

From Timbuktou?

I wanted it. I didn't want it. It cost too much. I put it down. He grabbed my arm. Again. Gently. No. "It's very old ... from the slave days. Copper." Well, it wasn't copper. Bronze, I guessed. Really heavy, 6 inches tall, it just fit on my forearm. "I'll throw in a whip ..." Sold! Is it really antique? Was $300 a crazy price? It does whisper to me ... of another era, another people, endless weeks of desert on camelback. Sweat. And labor. Haunting. Romantic.

Confetti in the hair, stolen shoelaces (and shoes and kids) are part of the risks of being too close to the parade participants.
