Going to school in Berkeley, California, I was used to people living on the streets. Calcutta redefined that for me. Here you would walk down the sidewalk, a foot away from a family's cooking fire. These people lived on the street and you felt like you were walking through their living room. It was intense. So much of life in India happens in public.
