The area was given its name by Ferdinand Magellen when he passed by in 1520. The name, which means "Land of Fire," referred to the many fires he saw on the land. Lit by the Yamana Indians who wore little or no clothing, the fires were meant for warmth not battle and were necessary for their survival.

We explored the park on a rare, gorgeous day with just enough clouds to enhance its beauty and serenity. We had been in Ushuaia five years earlier and knew how lucky we were to experience this extraordinary weather. Every breath was a blessing.
