It looks like just any other light pole on the Golden Gate Bridge, but this is the infamous pole 69 -- almost exactly midway across the span, facing Alcatraz and the city of San Francisco. Pole 69 is the most popular location for Golden Gate Bridge suicide attempts.
Yes, it is a problem. So much so that the city is spending millions of dollars to erect some sort of barrier to prevent people from jumping. Will it stop those who wish to end their lives from doing so? maybe, maybe not, but the poor rescue teams who have to find the bodies afterwards would sure appreciate the help.
