Kodiyakarai, because of its location (on the coast, close to Sri Lanka, and midways between two of ancient Tamil Nadu's main ports) and nature (shallow, marshy land) has always had lighthouses. The mighty Cholas built one here, whichm ruined though, still exists and is a tourist attraction. The British built one later, as did the government of India. This is the last.
