About this place:
Considered the birthplace of mariachi music, Cocula is about an hour southwest of Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco. Go the day before Mexican Independance Day, September 15, for the midnight reading of "El Grito," Miguel Hidalgo's 1910 "cry of independence," read from the balcony of the Municipal Palace.
On the morning of Independance day mariachi bands, charros on horseback and students from area schools parade through the streets, ending at the zocalo in the middle of town for a festival lasting into the night.
And be sure to have some birria, a spicy stew made with dried peppers and roasted baby goat.
