The distance is all jungle. It stretches as far as the eye can see, 360 degrees.
Mayan ruin on the highway between Chetumal and Escarcega on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. Highway runs along the Guatemala border. Deserted place. Miles and miles between gas stations. in the middle of the longest stretch is a town called Expujil. A 60-kilometer ride through jungle brings you to Calakmul, one of the Maya world's most thrilling ruins. Still wet from being pulled out of the jungle. No fat tourists. Just steps up into the sky where you can jungle stretching to every flat horizon, 360 degrees. Hot. Beautiful. Better than Cancun or Tulum or even, dare I say it, Tikal.
