Fishing Net and Saris

Fishing Net and Saris

A group of Indians stand at the edge of the water in front of one of the many Chinese fishing nets, taking in the moment on a weekend afternoon.

About this place:

No longer a Fort, this is one of three regions that make up the town of Kochi (or Cochin) in the state of Kerala, South India. This area is essentially a fishing village, using the unique design of the Chinese Fishing Net as one method of gathering fish, which can be bought in the evenings at fish stalls by the beach, and then taken to a beach front restaurant to be cooked for dinner. This is a popular place for tourists to spend some time due to its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with much to explore around the surrounding islands, and in the streets and alley of the town.

What a great place to hang out for a few days. A bite to eat at Dal Roti or Salt 'n' Pepper, coffee at Kashi or Cafe Solar, and a wander round the streets of this friendly corner of Kerala. The open spaces are often full of boys playing cricket, several games criss-crossing each other all at once. It used to be the main part of town, but now all the serious shopping is over in Ernakulam, a 20 minute ferry ride away. And it's well suited as a base for the various delights of Kerala...
