Designed by Thomas Paige, who also designed the remarkably similar looking Westminster Bridge in London, Lendal bridge became the second crossing of the River Ouse in York in 1863.
Though this was the final bridge to be built in this location, replacing a rope ferry, there was another failed attempt at a river crossing at this location .. another bridge which quickly collapsed. The steelwork from this failed bridge was reportedly transported East to Scarborough and used in the construction of Valley Bridge.
