Place to eat: The Cherry Hut, Beulah, Michigan, United States

The Cherry Hut

The Cherry Hut

Beulah, Michigan's Cherry Hut is like a trip back in time. You practically expect the inside to be in black-and-white and your car to be a Studebaker when you come back outside.

About this place:

This is a classic pie-and-coffee joint up in the midst of lakeside Michigan summer towns. The vibe up here makes me imagine people in fedoras pulling up in Studebakers — everything all gray-scaled or cherry red. Standing out from of the white wooden lattices, screen doors, and farmer's market barns on either side, you might get your picture taken next to the car. "Us at the Cherry Hut," you write on the back. With the Cherry Hut behind you, you're looking out across the road, at the lake.

Yeah, you can eat burgers or meatloaf here, and you can buy Cherry Hut shirts with smiling pies on them, but the reason you came here was the fresh cherry pie. The cherries? They came from up the road. The pie? It came from the kitchen, but fill out the form on the back of your red, pie-shaped placemat and they'll send pies to your house, too.

The coffee you'll drink 'cause it's there and you're there and you're eating pie.
