A white-faced heron enjoying the sunset at Laka Wanaka, New Zealand.
One of the highlights of New Zealand's South Island, Wanaka is a laid-back little town by an eponymous lake. In winter, most visitors will be here for the nearby ski fields - but in summer there is excellent hiking, rock climbing, flying, skydiving and sailing, not to mention wining and dining on the sunny waterfront. Wanaka also offers a great range of festivals and events, including the autumn Festival of Color, hill climb event Race to the Sky and the popular Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow.
