Stone Mountain Camping

Stone Mountain Camping

This is stone mountain shortly after sunset, bordered by the lovely stone mountain lake!

About this place:

Stone Mountain is the largest piece of exposed Granite in the world, and effectively the highest point in the Atlanta area at 1683 feet above sea level. Being quite similar in structure and appearance to Ayers Rock, in Australia, Stone Mountain is an impressive sight and an almost spiritual entity that really must be seen to be believed. The location has many outdoor activities, but the best is the short hike (45 mins. to an hour) to the top. For those less inclined to hike, a tramway is set up to take visitors to the top, which incidentally takes the rider by a massive Confederate Memorial carving in the side of a sheer cliff face, which is impressive regardless of your views on the civil war. I highly recommend this place, as it has many photographic opportunities too, with bare rocks, sparse trees, and an old semi-functional gristmill.
