Big Air

A skier catches some big air on active volcano Mt Ruapehu, 7200ft above sea level. The mountain lies in the middle of New Zealand's otherwise mostly flat North Island.

About this place:

Turoa is the smaller of two ski fields on active volcano Mount Ruapehu. Visitors from North America may not be impressed with the snow quality, but come spring, the backcountry riding is excellent. With lifts up to 7600ft above sea level, the ski field also offers stunning views of New Zealand's North Island - and intrepid riders can hike to 9177ft Tahurangi Peak for glacier skiing and bragging rights.
