Work on building the church began in 1800 but wasn't completed until many years later. The actual date of completion is unknown but construction was probably finished around 1830.

Mission San José de Tumacácori was established in January 1691 by Jesuit Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. It is the oldest mission in Arizona. The Mission is located in present-day Tumacácori National Historical Park, and is open to the public daily.
