About this place:
The Abó Ruins are part of the larger Salinas Pueblo Missions in New Mexico. During its heyday Abó was a lively center of trade for the people of the Acoma-Zuñi area, the Galisteo Basin near Santa Fe, and the plains. Salt was heavily traded in the area along with animal hides, and piñon nuts.
When Spaniards first visited the Salinas Valley in 1581, Abó was a thriving community. The Franciscans began converting the native residents and went on to build two churches in the area.
Because of the harsh natural environment, the people of Abó eventually left the area, sometime between 1672 and 1678, to take refuge in other towns along the Rio Grande.
