The long, curved, yellow building is the Military General Staff Building, which was built in 1819 by Italian architect Carlo Rossi. The monument in the center of the square commemorates the Russian defeat of Napoleon's army, and it was erected in 1834.
Located in the heart of central St. Petersburg, Palace Square is a pleasant place for a stroll. On the northern side of the square sits the State Hermitage Museum (the former Winter Palace of the Tsars), built in the 1750s, and on the southern side sits the Military General Staff building, a wonderful feat of architecture dating from 1819. In the center of the square stands the Alexander Column, a monument dedicated to the defeat of Napoleon.
