The locals laugh at it, the elevated train that runs in a short loop around downtown Detroit, Michigan, unconnected to any incoming public transportation lines. But on a frigid midwinter weekend when my travel companion and I discovered the Detroit People Mover, it made my heart laugh. We took the People Mover stop to stop -- 50 cents a ride, 13 stops, 13 and a half minutes around if you don't get off, just us, some casino-goers, and a handful of carless locals -- getting off at every stop to look around, until we realized we were going to be late for our dinner date. Next time we're not missing a single stop.
