Burial coffins

Burial coffins

Centuries-old burial coffins inside Sumaguing Cave in Sagada, Philippines. This one features a gecko a common motif in the Igorot (local ethnic tribe) visual culture.

About this place:

A remote town in the Mountain Province, Philippines. The place is good for nature tripping. Lots of hiking trails, several caves to explore and don't forget to try the native dishes like pinikpikan and local tapey rice wine.

Sagada is one of those places you can run to when you want to escape the noise of city life (just dont go there during Holy Week when the place gets packed with the same noisy city people). It's not easy to get there. It takes about 12 hours ride either via Nueva Ecija or Baguio. I prefer the Baguio - Mountain Trail route where you pass thru the highest road system in the Philippines. The view along the way is breathtaking. There are many places you can stay in Sagada. Be sure you are fit to take on the mountain hikes and the spelunking. Prepare with a lot of cardio exercises :-).
