Zaiten Sushi in San Francisco

Zaiten Sushi in San Francisco

Conveyor-belt style sushi, served on tiny floating boats, at Sushi Bune on Market Street in San Francisco.

About this place:

This tiny and unassuming little hole-in-the-wall just off Market Street offers one of the most authentic "conveyor belt sushi" (kaiten sushi) experiences you're likely to find this side of Tokyo. Most "sushi boat" places cater to tourists, but this Sushi Bune (The name means "Sushi Boat" in Japanese) is different. Just like a conveyor belt sushi place in Japan, it's primarily a working-class joint. It just so happens the sushi is served on little boats, instead of on the conveyor. But still... the decor is bland and a little worn, although the sushi is just fine — just like most of the conveyor belt sushi joints in Japan. All in all, this is a fun place to visit if you want to feel like an authentic Japanese salaryman during lunch.

I went here with Mr. Editor Guy one day for lunch. I'm a vegetarian, and Sushi Bune didn't have a ton of options for me, to be honest, but I didn't leave hungry either. Wakame roll, inari, kappa maki, and they had some veggie-friendly croquettes that I think were taro. There's also baskets of edamame that float by. What made up for the short veggie menu was the ambience. We had a hard time leaving from wanting to just sip tea while watching the boats do their thing.
