Banos Doorway

The morning light warms our hotel patio.

About this place:

Banos is where Ecuadorians go to relax. Banos means ‘baths’ which refers to their thermal springs that very popular with locals and tourists. The elevation is much easier on the lungs, but the views are still spectacular. Because of this, Banos is ideal for hiking, biking, horse riding and river-rafting. The local volcano Tungurahua (Little Hell) erupted in 1999 and still puffs smoke today, but Banos has fully recovered.

This is a great place to experience the outdoors, hit a coffee shop, visit a pena (local music) bar, then recover after a dip in the hot springs. Willie Navarette at Cafe Higueron is a recommended outdoor guide for this area. The city is very tranquillo (laid back) compared to Quito and is fairly safe at night.
