In 1453, the extordinary Aya Sofya church was converted into a mosque and the Christian frescos were covered up with plaster (which actually helped to preserve them.) The frescos began to be uncovered in 1929 during the effort to open the building as a world heritage museum.
Called Sancta Sophia in Latin, Haghia Sofia in Greek and the Church of the Divine Wisdom in English, Aya Sofya is one of Istanbul's most famous monuments! Famous in particular for its massive dome. It was the largest cathedral for almost 1000 years, then used as a Mosque. Now it is a museum.
