The "blue mosque" is located in Tabriz, north-western Iran. It was built in 1465, during the reign of Sultan Y‘aqub ibn Uzun Hassan, from the Ak Koyunlu tribe.

Since the beginning of the XXth century, the mosque has been under restoration now and then. The building is now completely rebuilt, and work is in progress for the ceramics inside. The name of the mosque come from ceramics used on the walls, with a dominant blue tint. The structure and its blue tiles used in the decoration inside and outside made it be known as the Turquoise of Islam.
