The main piazza in front of Sibenik's 15th century St Jakob's Cathedral is cool and quiet one early evening in October.
Sibenik lies on the Adriatic coast of Croatia about an hour's drive north of the international airport in Split. The medieval and Renaissance remains of the old city on the waterfront are beautifully restored and maintained and far less crowded than Dubrovnik. A ferry ride to one of the many islands offers isolated beaches, hikes through rocky, forested tracts nearly empty of people, and sidewalk eateries to enjoy the sun afterward. A day trip inland takes the visitor through jagged karst landscapes to the krka waterfalls.
