The Canal de la Robine in Narbonne is lined with houseboats on this cool December Sunday morning.
Originally a major Roman colony on the Via Domitia (part of which is still visible in the square in front of the cathedral), Narbonne lies on the Canal de la Robine, which ties into the Canal du Midi, a popular barge vacation route connecting the Mediterranean to Toulouse in the south of France. Sunday markets alongside the canal offer produce, new clothing and kitchen miscellany, and an array of handicrafts from francophone Africans as well as the usual flea market treasures.
