Sakura (cherry) blossoms in bloom along the Kanda river in Tokyo. This particular stretch near Edogawabashi is one of the most magnificent spots for the hanami (blossom-viewing) event in springtime.

If you've never thought of "cherry blossom viewing" as an pastime, you haven't spent much time in Japan in the springtime. I, too, wondered what all the fuss was about, until that magical week when the Sakura trees exploded into full bloom along the Kanda river in central Tokyo. Strolling leisurely up and down the paths along the river bank in a warm spring breeze, blanketed overhead by a fluffy canopy of pink and white, surely ranks as one of the highlights of my year abroad.
