Place to see: Kandagawa, T?ky?-to, Japan

The Kanda river itself isn't much to look at: It's essentially a concrete-lined viaduct. The real attraction here are the Sakura trees which line the banks and transform this concrete channel into heaven on Earth, for one brief week.

If you've never thought of "cherry blossom viewing" as an pastime, you haven't spent much time in Japan in the springtime. I, too, wondered what all the fuss was about, until that magical week when the Sakura trees exploded into full bloom along the Kanda river in central Tokyo. Strolling leisurely up and down the paths along the river bank in a warm spring breeze, blanketed overhead by a fluffy canopy of pink and white, surely ranks as one of the highlights of my year abroad.
