  On my first morning in Istanbul, I was wakened before dawn by the muezzin's call to prayer. Jet-lagged and unable to get back to sleep, I did what I do in the pre-dawn hours in California: laced up my Asics and went running. Past the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, down tortuous cobbled streets to the Golden Horn, then across the Galata Bridge. Several grizzled Turkish fishermen nodded at me, the overcast glowed with the sunrise over the Marmara Sea, and before me was the crazy jumble of Istanbul--a memorable start to a memorable trip.
