Blagaj

Blagaj

A view across the Buna river of the Tekija at Blagaj. The monastery is pushed up against the base of a tall cliff.

About this place:

Blagaj is an astonishingly beautiful spot at the base of a cliff where the Buna river seems to flow magically from the towering rock. The water is a gorgeous blue-green, and nestled beside it is a 16th century Dervish monastery called the Tekija. After enjoying the spectacular natural setting, tourists can remove their shoes and explore the small monastery with its starry dome and beautifully patterned carpets. If you're lucky enough to have the place to yourself for a moment, you may sense the spirituality that has drawn visitors here for hundreds of years.

My boyfriend and I visited Blagaj on the first day of an autumn excursion from Sarajevo to the coast of Croatia. After a spell of rainy weather, we were blessed with a perfect day to visit the monastery. We began with an alfresco lunch of fresh trout at one of the restaurants just down the road, then wandered towards the cliff beneath which the Tekija is nestled. After relaxing inside the monastery, we crossed the river to photograph the classic view. Along the path, pomegranates lay open on the ground, their seeds sparkling like rubies in the sun.
