Portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the Cu Chi tunnels.
The Cu Chi tunnels were a vast network of tunnels used by the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam during the war with the United States. The tunnels were two or three levels deep in order to preserve as much of the structure possible and protect the people in the event of bombing from the American B-52s. The tunnels were very narrow, making ti difficult for American soldiers to fit in them. They were also booby-trapped in order to discourage enemy infiltration. During the war, there were over 200 kilometers of tunnels and they included living quarters, kitchens, dining rooms, meeting halls and even rudimentary hospitals. The Cu Chi tunnels are open today for tourists.
