The Portland Classical Chinese Garden, named "The Garden of Awakening Orchids" is an authentically built Ming Dynasty style garden. Covered walkways, bridges, open colonnades, pavilions and a richly planted landscape frame Zither Lake, creating views that are never twice the same. This urban oasis of tranquil beauty and harmony was built by Suzhou artisans.
Over 500 tons of Tai Hu rocks, or limestone mined from Lake Tai, a fresh-water lake near Suzhourock, were shipped from China for the Garden. Northeast China Fir is used for most of the beams and columns. Northeast China Pine is used for the largest columns. Yingxing (Gingko) wood is used for the pale yellow decorative carving in the Pavilions.
The gardens are a not-for-profit organization with self- and guided-tours available. The gardens are open November 1 - March 31: 10:00am - 5:00pm and April 1 - October 31: 9:00am - 6:00pm. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5.50 for students, with children under 5 for free.
